All In All

B. wants more than anything in the world to go to

Annapolis.

He is brilliant, has the grades, and has a plethora of

additional experiences, talents, and accomplishments.  He is

polished.  His intelligence and his sweet way shows in his

 cheekbones and smile.

He thinks that he won't be considered because he is bilaterally

hearing impaired.

I remember when a first IEP meeting that I flew out for when

his family lived in Texas.  His parents were told that he

didn't need services because if a teacher smiled and waved,

he would smile and wave back.  This was the test and he passed.

His parents struggled financially for years to afford abprivate

placement with smaller class size.  They gave him access to

educational possibilities.

I encourage him to apply and talk to a counselor.  Will they

see this young man for who he is and what he can offer?

B. has an alternate plan.  He has learned to negotiate his way

through life.

But it hurts to think that he might have to confront the boundaries

of our stupidity on this systemic level.
