Continued from “The Game”

Matthew and I continue to work with the pennies, clips and drawing board.

I draw a horizontal line on a piece of paper.  I hand Matthew the marker and paper.

Matthew draws a horizontal line on a piece of paper.

Together we push the pennies and clips into a horizontal line on the table.

Then we sweep the manipulatives to the side.

I draw a vertical line on the paper.  I hand Matthew the marker and paper.

Together we push the pennies and clips into a vertical line on the table.

Then we sweep the manipulatives to the side.

I draw a simple shape, circle, square or triangle, on the paper.  I hand Matthew the marker and paper.

Matthew draws the same circle, square, or triangle on a piece of paper.

Together we push the pennies and clips into the same shape on the table.

Then we sweep the manipulatives to the side.

Today. After drawing lines and one shape, I handed Matthew the paper and marker.  The paper is blank.

Matthew looks at both for several minutes.  He slightly, barely, glances at me.

Matthew draws a triangle and pushes the paper and marker toward me.

I draw a triangle.  Together we push the pennies and clips into place.

When we return to his classroom, Matthew’s teacher asks, “What have you been doing with him?  All of a sudden he is beginning to read.”
